When I was a kid, I used to spend lots of time with my grandparents on my dad’s side. One of the reasons that I looked forward to these visits was that my grandparents always had a cocktail hour. And they always let whatever grandkids were visiting participate in cocktail hour – by making mocktails for us… and yes, it was the classic Shirley Temple.

My own mixed drink! And it has cherries on a toothpick! I must be special!

Named after the child actress from the 1930’s of the same name, the Shirley Temple is what most people think of when they think of mocktails.

Today (April 23rd) was her birthday!

Shirley Temple:

1/2 oz. grenadine

5 oz. lemon-lime pop

Mix together and pour over ice. Garnish with maraschino cherries.

Now that I’m an adult, I make Shirley Temples for my nieces when they visit me. Just a little tradition to pass on to the next generation. But as an adult, I want something a little stronger for cocktail hour.

Enter the Dirty Shirley. It’s everything you love about a Shirley Temple – but with a kick!

Dirty Shirley:

2 1/2 oz vodka

1 oz lime juice

1/4 oz grenadine syrup

oz ginger beer or lemon-lime pop

In a shaker, add ice, vodka, lime juice, and grenadine. Shake until cold. Pour into a rocks glass with fresh ice. Top with ginger beer or lemon lime pop, then garnish with maraschino cherries.
