There are at least 32,708,028 reported cases in 50 states + the District of Columbia, Puerto Rico and Guam. This is more than in any other country.
U.S. deaths: at least 581,755. California has the greatest number of reported deaths in the U.S., with 62,314.
U.S. total people tested: 444,920,177
The greatest number of reported COVID-19 cases in the U.S. is in California, with 3,758,137 confirmed cases out of a total state population of 39.51 million. This ranks third in the world after England, which has 3,874,415 cases, and Maharashtra, India, which leads the world with 5,101,737 reported cases. Texas is second in the U.S., with 2,914,539 confirmed cases out of a total state population of 29 million.
Latest reported COVID-19 vaccination numbers in the United States
The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention reports a total of 329,843,825 COVID-19 vaccine doses have been distributed in the U.S. Of those, 259,716,989 doses have been administered, with 152,116,936 people receiving at least one dose and 114,258,244 people fully vaccinated, representing 45.8% and 34.4% of the total U.S. population, respectively. The Moderna and Pfizer/BioNTech vaccines each require two doses to be effective. The Johnson & Johnson vaccine requires a single dose to be effective.
VAX Live concert raises $302 million for vaccine equity
Global Citizen’s star-studded VAX LIVE: The Concert to Reunite the World, which aired on Saturday, helped raise $302 million in funding and procure over 26 million COVID-19 vaccine doses to provide equitable vaccine access where it is needed most across the world. The concert, hosted by Selena Gomez, featured performances by Jennifer Lopez, Foo Fighters, H.E.R and more. There were also appearances by Ben Affleck, Chrissy Teigen, David Letterman, Prince Harry and Meghan Markle, as well as recorded messages from world leaders including President Joe Biden and first lady Dr. Jill Biden, and Pope Francis.
More lockdown restrictions to be lifted in the UK
People in England will soon be able to hug again. British Prime Minister Boris Johnson is expected to announce today that more lockdown restrictions are on track to be lifted on May 17. Starting next Monday, meetings of six people, or two households, will be allowed to take place indoors for the first time since January. Hugs will be allowed between households, though Johnson is expected to stress that they should be given cautiously, given concerns about new variants of the virus. He’s also expected to announce that indoor entertainment will reopen, as well as some foreign travel.
