There are at least 32,994,750 reported cases in 50 states + the District of Columbia, Puerto Rico and Guam.  This is more than in any other country.
U.S. deaths: at least 586,403.  California has the greatest number of reported deaths in the U.S., with 62,699.
U.S. total people tested: 453,354,386

The greatest number of reported COVID-19 cases in the U.S. is in California, with 3,769,827 confirmed cases out of a total state population of 39.51 million.  This ranks third in the world after England, which has 3,889,132 cases, and Maharashtra, India, which leads the world with 5,405,068 reported cases.  Texas is second in the U.S., with 2,931,500 confirmed cases out of a total state population of 29 million.

Latest reported COVID-19 vaccination numbers in the United States
The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention reports a total of 344,503,595 COVID-19 vaccine doses have been distributed in the U.S.  Of those, 274,411,901 doses have been administered, with 157,827,208 people receiving at least one dose and 123,828,224 people fully vaccinated, representing 47.5% and 37.3% of the total U.S. population, respectively. The Moderna and Pfizer/BioNTech vaccines each require two doses to be effective.  The Johnson & Johnson vaccine requires a single dose to be effective.

Retailers, states continue to lift mask mandates following CDC guidance
Of the two dozen states that still had standing statewide mask mandates last week, at least 21 have now opted to change their mask restrictions, following last week’s updated guidance from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, which advised fully vaccinated people could safely go without masks or physically distancing.  California, Hawaii and New Jersey, plus Washington, D.C. and Puerto Rico still have overarching mandates for mask use indoors.

Major retailers also continue to update their mask policies based on the CDC guidance.  Home Depot on Monday said it’s no longer requiring fully vaccinated customers or employees to wear masks in their stores.  Costco said it will no longer require “members and guests who are fully vaccinated” to wear masks, although “Face coverings will still be required in healthcare settings, including Pharmacy, Optical, [and] Hearing Aid,” and “continues to recommend that all members and guests, especially those who are at higher risk, wear a mask or shield.”  Target, Trader Joe’s and Starbucks have announced similar policy changes.  All of the retailers have noted that their policies are subject to state and local regulations.

US to share more COVID-19 vaccine doses with the world; India reports record single-day deaths
President Biden said Monday that the U.S. will share an additional 20 million doses of COVID-19 vaccines with the world in the coming six weeks.  The move comes as domestic demand for immunizations drops and global disparities in distribution have grown more evident.  The additional doses will bring the total U.S. commitment to 80 million, and will come from existing U.S. production of Pfizer, Moderna or Johnson & Johnson vaccine stocks.  The administration previously committed to share about 60 million doses of the AstraZeneca vaccine by the end of June.  Biden added that “we know America will never be fully safe until the pandemic that’s raging globally is under control.”

Biden’s announcement came on the day India reported 4,329 COVID-19 fatalities in the past 24 hours, marking its deadliest day yet.  That brings the country’s number of total coronavirus deaths to 278,719, according to data compiled by Johns Hopkins University, second only to the U.S.  Total infections in India now exceed 25 million, also second to the U.S., with the nation recording 263,533 new cases in the same 24 hours – which is actually good news, marking the second consecutive day India saw fewer than 300,000 new cases.
