One of the most-watched moments in TV history took place 40 years ago this week. The final episode of M.A.S.H. aired February, 28th, 1983 – a two-and-a-half hour long special titled Goodbye, Farewell, and Amen.
The episode drew a record nearly 106 million viewers – still the all-time ratings record for an episode of scripted television.
Interest in the finale was so big that CBS charged $450,000 for a 30-second commercial – more than that year’s Super Bowl and the equivalent of $1.2 million today.
