British Poet Laureate Simon Armitage has written an epic poem titled ‘Dear Pink Floyd’ to commemorate the 50th anniversary of Pink Floyd’s album ‘Wish You Were Here.’

The poem, commissioned by the band, reflects Armitage’s personal connection to the album and the impact of Pink Floyd’s music on listeners worldwide. Armitage – who was 12 when it was released –  describes the album as a “time-capsule treasure chest message in a bottle tied to a life buoy thrown on a life raft from a ghost ship.” and expresses his admiration for the band’s profound and thought-provoking music.

Inspired by Pink Floyd and their era-defining album Wish You Were Here, this piece arrives ahead of the album’s  re-release.  Although the album was once called  ‘gimmicky”  and “self indulgent”  it has since become a critical darling.

Pink Floyd posted about the poem:

The 50th anniversary edition features the original album plus two discs of studio rarities including 9 bonus tracks of previously unreleased alternate versions and demos. 50th anniversary edition of Wish You Were Here will be released on December 12th, and you can pre-order it (and other merch) here.
